When an iPhone HEIC Photo Will Not Open

Convert to JPG or PNG and check orientation, color, and metadata afterward.

Pick the format for the destination

HEIC saves space but some upload forms and older applications do not accept it. JPG is usually the practical choice for a regular photo; PNG can be much larger.

The conversion creates a new file, so keep the original until the recipient confirms that the result opens correctly.

Inspect the result

Open the new file to check orientation and color. Do not assume that capture date or location metadata is preserved or removed; inspect it separately if it matters.

Some unusual HEIC encodings may fail in a browser. Try a single photo or export it from the device’s photo application.
