Reduce Image Size without Guessing at Quality

A sensible order for adjusting pixels, format, and quality.

Start with dimensions

Check the receiving siteโ€™s recommended dimensions. A 4,000-pixel photo rarely needs to stay that large for a small web card.

For example, resizing a 4032ร—3024 photo to a 1600-pixel long edge gives roughly 1600ร—1200 pixels with aspect ratio preserved. The final file size depends on the image, format, and quality setting; check the actual output rather than assuming a fixed reduction.

Upsizing a small image cannot restore details that are missing from the original.

Then compare encoding

For photos, compare JPG and WebP quality. Keep PNG or transparency-capable WebP if the background must remain transparent. A PNG output does not use a lossy quality slider.

Open the finished file at full size to inspect text, faces, and sharp edges. Process very large batches in smaller groups on mobile devices.
