When text looks garbled

CSV stores text rows but applications can disagree about character encoding. ToolMarket’s CSV output includes a UTF-8 BOM.

If Excel still displays incorrect characters, use its data import flow and explicitly choose UTF-8.

Protect codes and dates

A spreadsheet may turn 00123 into 123 when it guesses a numeric column. Import postal codes and identifiers as text.

For a CSV headed code, name with a row 00123,Alex, set the code column to Text during import. Check both the first and last data rows after conversion to catch missing rows too.

Excel-to-CSV conversion reads the selected worksheet. Inspect sample rows, long numbers, dates, and leading zeros after conversion.
